This class is the start of a yearlong series covering many aspects of the science and art of restoring native habitat as practiced in the Iron Creek Land Community.
Oak savannas are one of the most biologically diverse and important ecosystems we have, and also one of the most endangered. Almost none of the original savanna of southern Michigan remains in pristine form. Yet, when you know what to look for, small (though degraded) remnant patches are everywhere. And there are signs that nature is trying to bring back this lost habitat. We can get involved and help nature with this process. Every season has its particular work. Winter is a good time for tree thinning to favor certain keystone oaks who are essential to the successful return of the savanna. This class will cover theory and practice as we walk throughout the property surveying various oak areas in different stages of savanna development.
